来源:IGN《Onimusha: Way of the Sword Review》节选(自我挑战 + 支线 + Verdict)
Initially, I actually found it too easy, so I gave myself a challenge: I would play without using any items. That meant everything from healing items to items that brought me back from the dead to items that granted temporary buffs. I figured it wouldn't last; you aren't meant to play this way, so I thought eventually I'd grow bored of the self-imposed handicap, get stuck, or just need to get this review wrapped up. I came close to giving in many times, but I'd always think, "I've made it this far, just a few more tries and then I'll give up." But I never did, and eventually the credits rolled. I'm not telling you this to brag; I didn't do it to put it in this review, or to show off, or prove a point. I did it because I wanted to see if I could. I did it for myself.
Onimusha's bosses are its greatest strength, but its optional content is also strong. So strong, in fact, that I did all of its side missions (and everything else) over the course of my 39-hour playthrough. My favorites were quests from Lady Murasaki, a writer whose spirit stayed in the world of the living to tell stories. She would send me to get to the bottom of anything that seemed interesting so she could write about it, whether that was a child searching for a father consumed by revenge, a wife praying for her abusive husband's recovery, or a man who believed he had been blessed with immortality by the gods.
What's even better is that many of these side quests build upon one another, telling a single narrative across several smaller stories that Murasaki herself then records. Other side quests often don't feature the same level of detail, but using drawings to find hidden treasures scattered around Kyoto, returning to previous areas to shoot down flying Genma, or just helping average citizens is often funny and rewarding. Even hunting down and rescuing Murasaki's missing Lion Dogs was entertaining, because the dogs themselves were incredibly cute and each one also rewarded me with a retelling of a story from Japanese mythology.
The best part of life is the challenge. You have to learn to love the fight.
I have wanted to be perfect for 10 seconds. Onimusha: Way of the Sword understands that desire. Each time I landed a perfectly timed Issen, pulled off a risky deflect, or landed a combo at just the right time, I felt like I had accomplished something. I had put myself to the test, and I'd succeeded. It's a testament to Way of the Sword's combat that I could beat it without using some of the systems designed to help you progress – not because you don't need them, but because it leaves room for you to truly understand its action and overcome their absence through sheer determination. Even if I hadn't intentionally made things harder for myself, though, I still would have loved spending time with Okuni, Takamura, Murasaki, Shizuka, and nearly all the denizens of this world. I still would have thought that Musashi himself is one of the coolest, most interesting protagonists in any video game, and I would have loved going on this journey with him. My journey reflected Musashi's, and Onimusha made that possible. The best part of life is the challenge. You have to learn to love the fight.

That meant everything from healing items to items that brought me back from the dead to items that granted temporary buffs.
拆解:主干极短:That meant everything(那意味着一切)。关键在于 from A to B to C 的展开结构:A 是 healing items(治疗道具),B 是 items that brought me back from the dead(复活道具,that 定语从句修饰 items),C 是 items that granted temporary buffs(临时增益道具,又是一个 that 定语从句)。 读长列举时,抓住 from...to...to...
考点:① from A to B to C 列举结构;② 两个 that 定语从句分别修饰 items;③ brought 的过去式(bring 的不规则变化)。
Since many bosses have multiple phases and health bars, I would often master one only to get clobbered by the next.
I would often master one 里,would 表示过去的习惯性动作(我常常刚精通一个)。only to get clobbered by the next 是"only to do"结构,表示"结果却……",通常接出乎意料、令人沮丧的结果(结果却马上被下一个打趴)。
考点:① Since 原因状语从句;② would + 动词原形表过去习惯;③ only to do 结果状语(表"结果却");④ multiple phases and health bars 的名词并列。
It's a testament to Way of the Sword's combat that I could beat it without using some of the systems designed to help you progress – not because you don't need them, but because it leaves room for you to truly understand its action and overcome their absence through sheer determination.
It's a testament to Way of the Sword's combat that...——it 是形式主语,真正的主语是 that 引导的从句(我能不用某些系统通关,就是战斗系统优秀的最好证明)。 破折号后 not because...but because... overcome 和 understand 并列作 to 的不定式宾语(leave room for you to do A and B)。
考点:① It's a testament to sth that... 句型(形式主语 + that 从句);② without doing;③ 过去分词作后置定语(designed to...);④ not because...but because... 对比结构;⑤ 不定式并列(to understand...and overcome...)。

1. B。原文:I gave myself a challenge: I would play without using any items……I did it because I wanted to see if I could——为了测试自己,选 B。
2. A。come close to doing = 差一点做某事,give in = 放弃/认输。
3. B。原文:many of these side quests build upon one another, telling a single narrative——支线彼此衔接、合成一个完整故事,选 B。
That failure didn't break me; instead, it made me determined to finish the task through sheer willpower.
The best part of life is the challenge. You have to learn to love the fight.
· The best part of life is the challenge. You have to learn to love the fight.
· Don't run away from difficulties — learn to love the fight, and you'll grow.
