In 2002, Vice City absorbed me immediately. I was obsessed and could not stop playing it. In 2026, I'm hooked all over again. I'd honestly forgotten how great it was to look at, certainly by PS2 standards. I actually don't know what looks better: the evenings, or the sunrises. I also love all the little flourishes embedded in it – from the glinting ocean chop to the subtle way Tommy's clothes flap as he whips through the air on a motorcycle. Bikes are such an excellent addition and feel great to ride, and I really dig the way they're tuned to let you slide them aggressively into corners without abruptly gripping up and flinging Tommy over the top of them. Cars handle more sharply than GTA III, too, and have a better sense of weight, which is such a crucial part of open-world action games for me.
The combat? Well, I'm still in a love/hate relationship with the general blasting. Yes, the auto targeting is effective in locking on and cutting down your opposition, but only when it's locking onto your actual opposition – and not your literal allies who you drove to the shootout personally. I just wish it knew the cops directly in front of me are a bigger threat than the distant motorcyclist trying to flee the scene, and it remains an annoying idiosyncrasy of this era of GTA, particularly when it causes me to fail a mission. There are still no mid-mission checkpoints in Vice City, but it does introduce helpful, automated taxi rides back to the start of missions you were just wasted on. By cutting down on repetitive travel, Vice City is not only more respectful of our time, I also think it reduces the risk of players growing to resent particular stretches of the map they otherwise might've been forced to drive to and fro across one too many times.
That said, it's hard for me to grow tired of being in a vehicle in Vice City thanks to the soundtrack, which weaponised licensed music so successfully it single-handedly reinvented the etymology of many of these songs in my brain. Perhaps the most impressive side effect of having a soundtrack this vast, memorable, and expertly curated is the way it flavours the missions in different ways for different playthroughs. Almost a quarter of a century after playing it for the first time, I found myself in a dirtbike chase through the back alleys of Washington Beach to the pop strains of 99 Luftballons. Not a song I would've considered for a frantic, high-speed chase – and yet the uptempo pop jam worked a treat. The fact that you can Baby Driver yourself to an unexpectedly brilliant bit of backing music is one of the GTA series' greatest strengths, and Vice City is arguably the absolute acme. As far as I'm concerned, it's not just the best soundtrack of the GTA series – edging out San Andreas and Vice City Stories – it's one of the best soundtracks in video games full stop.
There are a combination of elements all working in concert with each other to crank up the atmosphere to irresistible heights. The large fleet of angular exotic supercars and boxy American land whales on the roads, glinting as the beaming sun catches their windscreens. The pedestrians strutting the sidewalks in leather jumpsuits that look like they've been peeled directly off Michael Jackson. A bright, sun-kissed cityscape that's so different to the dense, grimy greys of Liberty City, and which sits atop a seedy underbelly of chainsaw carnage, cartel chaos, cocaine, and cheap porn. The pastel pants, the palm-lined streets, the pulsating soundtrack – all of this in unison made Vice City a magically immersive time capsule like no other game at the time, and like few others since.
To this day, the opening moments of GTA: Vice City remain one of my most memorable gaming experiences ever. After getting into your first car, you'll immediately hear the unmistakable bass line of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. It's a small but meaningful moment that instantly plunges you into the past and feels like a happy accident, but it wasn't – it was engineered to always be Billie Jean. Everyone heard it. Or, at least, they did until later re-issues and remasters of the game unfortunately trimmed it from the soundtrack. Either way, I was completely enchanted by Vice City from that moment. In 2026? I still can't get enough of it. With its wide variety of vehicles, weapons, and missions, its stacked cast of recognisable voices, and its unmatched atmosphere, Vice City may have gone backwards in time – but it was a huge stride forward for the series and one of my all-time favourites.

I just wish it knew the cops directly in front of me are a bigger threat than the distant motorcyclist trying to flee the scene, and it remains an annoying idiosyncrasy of this era of GTA, particularly when it causes me to fail a mission.
I just wish it knew...——wish 后的宾语从句用过去式 knew 表虚拟愿望;knew 后的宾语从句(the cops...are a bigger threat...)省略了 that;motorcyclist 后的 trying to flee the scene 是现在分词作后置定语。and 连接第二个分句 it remains an annoying idiosyncrasy...,句末 particularly when...
Perhaps the most impressive side effect of having a soundtrack this vast, memorable, and expertly curated is the way it flavours the missions in different ways for different playthroughs.
Perhaps the most impressive side effect...is the way...,是"主系表"结构,主语中心词 side effect;of having a soundtrack 是介词短语作后置定语,soundtrack 后接 this vast, memorable, and expertly curated——this 作副词修饰形容词(意为"如此")+ 三连形容词并列,其中 expertly curated 是"副词 + 过去分词"作形容词;表语 the way 后省略了关系词(that/in which),接 it flavours the missions...。
It's a small but meaningful moment that instantly plunges you into the past and feels like a happy accident, but it wasn't – it was engineered to always be Billie Jean.
It's a small but meaningful moment,后面 that 引导定语从句,从句内两个并列谓语:plunges you into the past(把你抛进过去)和 feels like a happy accident(感觉像快乐的意外);but it wasn't 是省略句,完整为 but it wasn't a happy accident,破折号后 it was engineered to always be Billie Jean 揭晓真相——engineer 的动词用法(被精心设计)是点睛之笔。
考点:① small but meaningful 对比式形容词修饰;② that 定语从句 + 双谓语并列;③ 省略句 but it wasn't;④ engineer 作动词(精心设计)的熟词僻义。
● Baby Driver / 《

(提示词:go backwards in time, a huge stride forward)
1. B。原文:In 2002...I was obsessed...In 2026, I'm hooked all over again——2002 年沉迷过,2026 年再度沉迷,选 B。
2. B。原文:the auto targeting is effective...but only when it's locking onto your actual opposition – and not your literal allies——有效但会锁错目标,选 B。
3. B。原文:it flavours the missions in different ways for different playthroughs——不同的游玩过程里,配乐给任务染上不同味道,选 B。
4. B。原文:it wasn't – it was engineered to always be Billie Jean——看似偶然实则精心设计,选 B。
Vice City may have gone backwards in time – but it was a huge stride forward for the series.
踩分点:①may have done(对过去的推测);②go backwards in time(在时间上往回走);③a huge stride forward(向前一大步);④for the series(对这个系列而言)
Vice City may have gone backwards in time – but it was a huge stride forward for the series.
这是"先抑后扬"收尾句的教科书:go backwards 与 stride forward 形成精准对仗,一个 may have 让步、一个 but 转折,最后落在 forward 上收束全文。
● The sequel may have gone backwards in technology – but it was a huge stride forward in storytelling.
● Moving back to my hometown felt like going backwards in life – but it was the biggest step forward I've ever taken.
● The team may have lost the match – but it was a huge stride forward for a club this young.
