[2026/07/14] vol.16 Social Structure Simulation | Stellaris
Preface: This is a social structure simulation game with an age rating of "7+".
Ideological Gameplay
A core gameplay element lies in the customization of ideology. Players are given considerable freedom to define the "Ethics" of a nation (or planetary civilization). Excluding the special Gestalt Consciousness ethic, there are eight ethics arranged in four opposing pairs:
Militarist – Pacifist
Xenophobe – Xenophile
Egalitarian – Authoritarian
Materialist – Spiritualist
Each of these eight ethics has an extreme version, which brings more pronounced modifiers along with corresponding restrictions on policies and other aspects. Through these diverse ethics and government forms, the game allows players to engage in a grand sandbox simulation at the galactic level, exploring how civilizations interact with one another.
This ideological gameplay is not limited to interactions between civilizations; it also manifests within internal political structures. For example, in an extreme Authoritarian empire, each change of leadership can trigger political turbulence, while in a democratic system with universal suffrage, the proliferation of factions and power blocs can itself become a source of resistance to decision-making.
A Cosmic Sandbox
Similar to the Civilization series in its approach, Stellaris exercises relative restraint in visual representation. Much of the experience is conveyed through text and the player's own imagination of the vast cosmos—and this very quality may be a crucial component of the game's sense of grandeur, as well as a key support for its ideological gameplay. When the game's visuals are not concerned with rendering every minute detail, players are invited to fill in the gaps through imagination: the rise and fall of each planet, every exchange of fire between fleets, each first contact between civilizations—all are enriched by the player's mental imagery.
The game offers a remarkably broad framework for social experimentation. Different civilizations, shaped by their ideological foundations, may exhibit radically different behavioral tendencies: they might attempt to build a galactic federation, or seek to conquer the entire galaxy through expansion, or try to fundamentally alter the structure of the universe through psychic powers, and so on. The game's grandeur does not stem solely from narrative experiences along the way, but also from the possibility of active historical creation by the player. Consequently, the immersion and engagement it generates are often distinctly different in mechanism and form from those of other games.
Concluding Remarks – Purpose and Anti-Teleology
The game also explores new propositions through the advanced paths civilizations can choose during development. For instance:
Along the Mechanical Ascension path, civilizations must upload their consciousness into mechanical bodies. In an era where technological development far outstrips previous rates of change, the new moral and social dilemmas faced by society become nearly impossible to anticipate.
Along the Genetic Ascension path, civilizations gain the ability to directionally modify species traits, enabling highly customized reproduction and evolution. This carries a tendency for life forms themselves to be instrumentalized and excluded from moral-ethical consideration, thereby constructing justifications for class oppression between species—and potentially serving as a catalyst for systemic catastrophe.
In its form, the game does not simply establish a straightforward link between "player goals" and "achievable outcomes." Rather, it takes an almost contrary approach to warn players: one cannot stake the survival of an entire civilization on specific, stable rules—or even on the belief in prosperity or stability itself. When we elevate our perspective to the rise and fall of a civilization as a whole, we may find ourselves startled that the convictions or moral-ethical frameworks we once held in our personal lives no longer apply to the specific social structures within the game.
A final note from the author: If we were to regard our own civilization as a galactic civilization, perhaps this game's age rating is more fitting than it might first appear...
